The Reality of Maintaining a Classic Wooden Yacht: Craftsmanship, Care & Commitment
9 February 2026As Seafin rests comfortably on her mooring along the River Hamble this winter, we’re rolling up our sleeves and diving into some vital maintenance to ensure she’s in top shape for the summer charter season. Winter is the perfect time to tackle the big jobs, and this year is no exception.
Under Wraps
Currently, Seafin is shielded by a custom shrink-wrap tent that keeps her protected from the elements. While it may not win any beauty contests, this robust cover has already proven its worth, withstanding two storms with winds over 50 mph. The tent allows us to work in all weather conditions, while also keeping Seafin safe and dry during the colder months.
Reviving the Foredeck and Bulwarks
One of the key tasks this season is the complete overhaul of the foredeck. We’ve been carefully stripping out the old, worn deck caulking—painstaking work, but crucial for maintaining Seafin’s structural integrity and classic charm. Giles and James have been leading the charge, working with precision and dedication to make sure the job is done right.
At the same time, we’re removing and replacing the entire bulwark. It’s a big project, and we’re all pitching in. Our Chief Stewardess, Sophie, has even been helping with the removal of old plywood sections—proof that teamwork comes in many forms, and that a good stew can double as a shipwright’s apprentice when needed!
Unexpected Repairs
As often happens with classic boats, we’ve encountered a few surprises along the way. During the bulwark removal, we discovered a couple of frames that will need replacing. Fortunately, our skilled shipwright and his team are ready to handle these repairs when Seafin is lifted out of the water in February. It’s all part of the ongoing effort to preserve the beauty and integrity of this special vessel.
Looking Ahead to Summer
As we move through these essential tasks, we’re also eagerly anticipating the warmer months when Seafin will once again be out on the water, welcoming guests for another season of unforgettable adventures. Every plank, nail, and line of caulking brings us one step closer to ensuring she’s ready for another summer of chartered experiences on the beautiful Solent.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our winter maintenance journey. We’ll be sharing photos and stories from the yard as Seafin prepares to make waves once again in 2025!
